Hulk at Castletown

Date made: 1884-1933

Artist: Knox, Archibald

Description: A dark brooding watercolour by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of a large boat hulk in Castletown harbour. The hulk was a popular scene for Knox to paint and there are several versions of the boat painted from various viewpoints, including views with the medieval Castle Rushen in the background (IOMMM: 1994-0274). The artist is said to have painted his watercolour scenes in a few hours or less, but that he would also sit for hours waiting for the exact light and cloud formations that he wanted to paint.
