The Lock Gates, Birdham, Sussex
Date made: 1884-1933
Artist: Knox, Archibald
Description: A colourful and relatively detailed watercolour by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) entitled 'Birdham' and depicting the large canal lock gates on the Chichester canal at Birdham, Sussex. Knox's watercolour sketches can be seen as exercises in capturing the light and a single moment in time. In this case, the artist is contrasting the darkness and deep shadows of the lock gates with the bright sunshine on the grass banks in the foreground.
