Rain over a cornfield
Date made: 1884-1933
Artist: Knox, Archibald
Description: A minimalist and almost abstract watercolour by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of a rain cloud over a field, painted in solid blocks of colour. The field has been painted with a minimal amount of detail and it is not immediately apparent whether the mounds are 'stooks' (small stacks of corn sheaves), 'thurrans' (haystacks) or large rocks in a field. The main focus of the painting is the field bathed in sunshine and the approaching black storm clouds. Knox's watercolour sketches can be seen as exercises in capturing the light and a single moment in time.
