Watercolour 55

Qualtrough's Yard, Castletown

Date made: 1884-1933

Artist: Knox, Archibald

Description: A dark brooding watercolour by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of a large boat hulk in Castletown harbour at Qualtrough's Yard, with Castle Rushen in the background.. The hulk was a popular scene for Knox to paint and there are different versions of the boat painted from various viewpoints, some with or without the medieval Castle Rushen in the background. Unlike most of his watercolour sketches which are untitled and unidentified views of the Manx landscape, Knox identified this as ''Qualtrough's Yard, Castletown'. The artist is said to have painted his watercolour scenes in a few hours or less, but that he would also sit for hours waiting for the exact light and cloud formations that he wanted to paint.

Materials: watercolour on paper
