Watercolour 116

Killane Mill, Ballaugh

Date made: 1898

Artist: Knox, Archibald

Description: A watercolour view by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of the Killane Mill at Ballaugh. Unlike many of his watercolour paintings which are untitled and unidentified views of the Manx landscape, Knox has both signed and written a title and date on the painting in his distinctive and intricate script 'Killane, IOM A Knox 1898'. This work will probably have been produced in the Easter or summer holidays of 1898, as he had moved to England in 1897 to teach and only returned to the Island for the holidays. The artist is said to have painted his watercolour scenes in a few hours or less, but that he would also sit for hours waiting for the exact light and cloud formations that he wanted to paint.

Measurements: unframed artwork: 41 cm x 55 cm
