Claddagh Mill, Sulby, Lezayre
Date made: 1904
Artist: Knox, Archibald
Description: A watercolour view by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of the whitewashed buildings at the Claddagh Mill, Sulby. Farm buildings and mills were a popular (and challenging) topic for Knox as he tried to capture what was essentially a 'white box' and attempted to give them volume and make them 3 dimensional on the paper. Unlike most of his watercolour paintings which are untitled and unidentified views of the Manx landscape, Knox has written a title and date on the painting in his distinctive and intricate script 'Claddagh VI 04'. For most of his working life, Knox worked both as an art teacher and as a designer, but from c.1900-1904 he lived in a cottage in Sulby on the Isle of Man and produced many of his world famous metalwork designs for Liberty & Co. of London, for which he is most well-known.
